Dr. S.Y. Quraishi

Dr Quraishi is, quite literally, one among millions. Named in the Indian Express’s list of 50 Most Powerful Indians of 2011 and 2012 and India Today’s High and Mighty Power List 2012, he is one of the most sought-after people for insights on how India works. He is one of very few people who understand the intricacies of how the world’s largest democracy works, given his more than 35 years in the civil services in various roles.The former Chief Election Commissioner of India (2010 – 2012), and earlier Election Commissioner of India (2006-10), Dr Quraishi has delivered lectures on democracy and elections at a number of universities, including Harvard, Yale, Pennsylvania, California, North Carolina and UC Berkeley in the US and Cambridge and London in UK.

Dr Quraishi held the offices of Special Secretary (Health) and Director General of the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) where he brought India’s national AIDS control programme on to the world map. He is well regarded for his special contributions in social sector reforms covering health, education, population, drug abuse, civil society action, women and child development, HIV/AIDS, youth and adolescent issues. He is known to be the first person in the world to get a doctorate in social marketing, a concept he has effectively used for creating public awareness and behaviour change.

Also a known name in power sector, Dr Quraishi has served as Secretary of the Department of Power and Non-Conventional Energy in Haryana and as Additional Secretary for Ministries of Renewable Energy and Steel in GOI. His power reforms in Haryana were adjudged among the 10 best projects by the World Bank with whom he successfully negotiated a 600 million US dollar loan.

He set up the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management which, in a short span of two years, has already trained election managers of 35 countries. He has been appointed on the Board of Advisors of International IDEA (Institute of Democracy and Electoral Assistance) an inter-governmental organisation based in Stockholm, Sweden.

Dr. Quraishi has a number of books, articles and talks to his credit. His book ‘Social Marketing for Social Change’ has broken new ground in the field of development communication. Besides being the Chairman of CELL, Dr. Quraishi is also the Honorary Chair for Sightsavers India.

A Masters of Science (MSc) in Science communication from the reputed Australian National University (ANU), Tanya specializes in making complex scientific and technical issues in to easily understandable and interesting stories that can be communicated through various media to the right audience. She has done a course in Business Ethics and Sustainability from Nyenrode Business Universiteit (University of Utrecht, Nederlands). She has now become affliated to the Cradle to Cradle movement worldwide- that is a plan based strategic approach to get companies off the path of being less bad to designing their products and services to be more good. It is an approach that moves away from minimization, reduction and guilt management to designing for abundance by mimicking nature’s cycles.

She also holds a Permaculture design certificate that is based on creating a compound web of life and technologies to create self-sustaining systems, a PV. Syst. Certificate from Steinbeis Centre for Technology Transfer (Germany)

Her previous education qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts with Honours, from Hindu College, Delhi University. She has many years of experience in PR and communication along with sustainable design and has participated in reforestation projects around Auroville. As a college student she spent her summer at WWF (World Wildlife Fund for nature).

Tanya believes that the best way to succeed in the future is to create it. She is passionate about taking companies in to a sustainable future that creates win-win situations for all stakeholders and manifests a positive triple bottom line for– People, Planet and Profit.

She is also the founder and Director of ‘Observing I’ that is successfully electrifying schools in rural Uttar Pradesh with solar energy and distributing solar lanterns to school going children in villages with either no electricity or with an unreliable supply. Her mission is to take businesses in to sustainable future where social, ethical and environmental responsibility, play a strategic role in overall business growth, development and sustainability.

She is delighted with the idea that more and more companies around the world are proving that ethical business is not an enemy of profit, in fact the reality is quite the contrary.

Like many in her generation, she is aware of global data trends that reveal an increasing number of companies, some of them global giants, showing to the world that ethical business can make companies- more profitable, more resilient, more innovative and overall more sustainable while having a positive environmental and social impact.
